Burma (Myanmar)
Even the briefest visit to Burma will give you an idea of the massive difference between Burma and its neighbours - some things are obvious like poverty and some less obvious like human rights. I would suggest that thoroughly research the situation in Burma before making the trip.
Amnesty Internation has a reasonably detailed report on the human rights situation. However, as in many dictatorships, Amnesty's ability to monitor human rights are severely restricted.
BBC's Profile of Aung San Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner who has spent over 10 years under house arrest and jail under Burma's military regime. Often compared to Nelson Mandela, Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy offer some hope for many Burmese.
